Previous changes

After its release, The Sandman has undergone numerous changes. This was most probalbly due to gameplay and balancing concerns from the playing community.

March 13, 2009 Patch:

  • Players who are stunned by a Scout now take 50% less damage
  • Increased the minimum distance to stun a player with the Sandman

August 13, 2009 Patch:

  • A Scout will receive 1 point for stunning an enemy and 2 points for a long range stun
  • Stunned players now take 75% of all incoming damage instead of 50%
  • Übercharged players can no longer be stunned
  • Heavies spinning their mini-guns will continue to spin when stunned (whether the left or right mouse button is pressed)
  • The minimum distance to stun a target has been reduced
  • The negative attribute has changed from "no double jump" to "-30 max health"

December 17, 2009 Patch:

  • The Sandman now only stuns on a long range hit (when you hear the cheering)
  • All shorter hits now force the enemy into the thirdperson fleeing state (also removed the damage reduction on them)
  • Penalty changed from -30 max health to -15 max health.

  • Even though the Sandman is made out of wood, when dropped they still supply engineers with 100 points of metal.
  • On one of the sides of the Sandman (seen all the time with the Sandman out in the view model), the bat itself has its name printed/written on it.
  • The band on the end seems to be holding a cracked section of wood together, presumably from the Scout beating someone a little too enthusiastically on a previous occassion.
  • In Major League Baseball, only wooden bats are considered regulation. Perhaps this is why the Scout only hits balls with the Sandman.
  • For a time, the December 17 patch was bugged, and people stunned by the sandman could still shoot and move at full speed, taking away the point of the sandman. This was later fixed in the "WAR" Update.
  • Currently, the Sandman has no downsides. Although very few players are skilled enough to get more than one long range stun a game, the ball can still help if you are trying to get away from an opponent, want to ambush a Heavy (always use it this way at long range) or stun an enemy before he kills you or a teammate. The only downside, -15 health, is so minor that it does not usually make a difference.
