Which picture should we use?

Hey guys, I uploaded a few screen captures of the Head Section of the Character loadout screen from the Heavy. Which one should we use in this article? I can't decide.

  • This is just a picture of the empty box of the character loadout that says: HEAD

Media:Full menu.JPG

  • This is a picture of the full character loadout and contains the head section in the corner.

  • When you click on the HEAD section of the character loadout, this is the empty selection screen.

My money is on the "Menu.JPG" but it's a pretty close call. What do you guys think?--Eh_Leck_Trick 00:30, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

I would take the Full menu.jpg. It's easy to spot that the headgear is related to unlockable items plus it's on the right side, seperating it from weapons. But the "Menu.jpg" is also pretty good, so why don't use both? --Paperattack
How about a picture of just the character and headgear spot, it makes it a bit smaller. --DJTricky 14:29, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

New images

These new images are horrendous.
I'll get to making them right in a bit.

Unlock hats

How do you Unlock a hat? --Pyro 19:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

It's random. After about some mysterious but regular period of time, the game will roll a dice. Sometimes you may get lucky and get an unlock, but other times you probably won't. Hats are rare items so its difficult to get them because the chance of rolling the right combination is slim.--Eh_Leck_Trick 04:52, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Headshot versus hat...

Does wearing a hat make it easier to headshot you? With the exception of the Engineer, all of the hats make your head a little larger (AKA: A headshot into a demo's afro or even a little shot on the tip of of the pyro's beanie hat.

Nope it doesn't. The hitboxes remain unchanged. They're bigger than the head anyway.

Rename the sections?

In the descriptions, all names are with caps on both words, like Soldier's Stash but not on the titles, the main hat page and the nav box. Someone who has the power to alter the topic titles to both have capitals should quickly do this and alter those pages as well. Hint, before you do, open all "pages that link here" edit it and then correct it on those pages as well.

The general policy for items and equipment is that that additional words aren't capitalised unless they're a 'brand' name (E.g. Bonk! Atomic Punch) except in the first bolded instance on the page. All the Hat names are descriptive, so it'd be easier to fix the descriptions instead.--Wilsonator 12:13, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Hat names

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where did all these names for the hats come from? And where's the proof of a hatless option? This may sound a bit up-front, but I want proof. Onyyx Ryoku 14:56, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

I believe this is the source: SteveCentra 19:54, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Soo... A few people with no evidence qualifies as proof these days? --Abcxyq 23:43, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Need pictures

I could provide one for the Medic's mirror but unfortunetely it seems to have some fire texture applied to it :(--Medic 05:42, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

It's some shine thing. I'd rather go in the SDK and view the items, just be sure to uncheck specular for the hats. --Firestarter PRG 06:37, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Unlock the page so it can be updated?

Kinda want to get pictures of the new hats up... but the page is locked.

I'm not sure if this is an old question but it should be up now.

Give 'em a chance, lads

Since there are now 27 hats (Is that right?), does this mean that we have a better chance of getting one in the random item drop system? --TIGERmedic 01:53, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes and no. The item drop chance stays the same, but there's a better chance for the drop to be a hat now. (13.5% or somewhere thereabouts) -- Balphezar 02:08, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
It seems to me that the chance of getting a hat is a lot smaller than 0.5% a minute. It almost seems like out of every 50 items, one is a hat. I will use an idling program (which shows what other people get) as an experiment -Firestorm2 16:59, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Other Hidden Pages

Should we add these other hidden links to the External Links?

Please have the hat images on this page redirect to their respective hat pages. Thanks. Smashman 13:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Drop Rate Change

From the Sept. 2 update article from

"Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats."

Anyone know how to figure out the new rate?Spy Master Kaze 23:06, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Should the Halo be added to the page? It is a hat, after all.

I'm pretty sure it is now.

Changes to page

I've cleaned up the page a little bit and added some new images. I've separated the intro so it talks about the hat drop rate and a few details about the special hats, and I've created a new section called "history of hats" and went into more detail about the idling controversy and the special hats in there. I've also added the picture of the heavy - I think it's a better picture than the magazine since that's more about hats rather than a picture of an actual hat if that makes sense. I guess it could be changed to another class. I also added a picture of the Cheater's lament since that's an important part of the hat history. If I've done something wrong feel free to change it, or add to it. Thanks :) Seb 00:36, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Good work, though I preferred that magazine image at the top. It just seemed to work better than reposting the football helmet pic. Would you mind if I brought it back? The Spy is welcome to stay. Edit- There's also a few strange sentences and grammar mistakes in there. I'd fix them up for better readability. There's also the odd fact here and there that would/are covered better on the hat specific pages. I may go over it a bit but it's an all-user wiki, what're they for after all. I think the lament thing should be mentioned on the hat page, but not in too much detail here. It's not really written down but we try to distance ourselves from the drama that goes on. It's rather boring really, especially when people use the page as a rantbox. =P --Wilsonator 01:33, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
I don't try to use it as a rant box, I just thought the idler controversy was relevant to the hats in general and that's why I put it in. I'll try and cut it down a little bit and merge a couple of a paragraphs or something. You're welcome to fix up any spelling errors, I'd be grateful for that. Seb 23:15, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Spy's Magistrate's Mullet

Shouldn't it be placed in the "Fourth Generation" hats? Its is indeed a 4thGen.. --Coconut 05:30, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

New Hat Ideas

Since the release of player made hats for tf2 I wanted to make a section of hat ideas, add what you like and add links if you want to show any ideas more in detail. If you are an animator and want to use some of the ideas found on this trend and submit them please email the the one who thought it up or at least give them credit. Leave your Emails with your responses.

1. Engineer: Coon skin hat and dunce hat ( since Engie is texan I would assume he remembers the Alamo. dunce hat cause its ironic.)

2. Heavy: Soviet officer hat AKA the "Styl'n Stailn" ( I've always liked this hat and it reminds me of M.Bison from Street fighter")

3. Soldier: Uncle Sam Hat ( It would cover his eyes of coarse but also fits well with soldiers extreme love of the military)

4. Demoman: Celtic helmet or lamp shade (Fitts well with the charge and targe and eyelander, the lamp shade is the official drunk frat boy hat.)

5. Medic: Tooth fairy wings,Goatee and wizard hat ( the wings seem more like a random item like the spy beard but it would be funny, the goatee would also be a random item, its just to make him look like gordon freeman)

6.pyro: Jester hat and clown wig ( I just think they fit him)

7:spy: Fez ( reminds me of that bond villain, i keep forgetting his name)

8: Scout: Boy scout sash and sweat band ( the sweat band is cause of the running, the sash is also like the spys beard)

9. Sniper: Aboriginal face paint and robin hood hat ( The face paint is a random item and the hat is for a nice look with the huntsman.) Email: ironmngr at gmail dot com

More ideas: Demo's Pirate hat, spy's turban and beret, Sniper's buffalo skull hat andEngie's Hypno goggles

Mixed up Pictures

.The pictures of the Tower pillar of Hats, Noble Assessment, and Modest Pile are not matched with their names. I am unsure how to fix it, so I ask if someone else will. -Über Spycrab

Thanks for noticing, I fixed it. MK 12:38, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Clarify hat set 2 and 3

Set 1 hats are from Sniper v Spy, set 4 are the community ones, sets 2 and 3 are from the classess update. My question is since 2 and 3 were released at the same date, why cant they be the classed as a single set? (eg set 2, then the community ones are set 3) -- Narconarco1 11:09, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Set 2 and 3 were merely in that arrangement when I decided to put them in sets. I did attempt to make them one set, but it ruined the table's formatting. If you wish to attempt to amalgamate them into one set, be my guest. But try and keep the table's formatting the same. Smashman 08:35, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Order of hats?

In the TF2 backpack, where you show the items you collected, there is an option that automatically sorts out your items according to type, class, and loadout slot. When it sorts the hats, it sorts them out in almost the same exact order. I will only list hats that belong to the same character for an example (things bolded are ones that I am unsure of:

-Soldier's Stash

-Stainless Pot

-Tyrant's Helm

-Brigade Helm

-Pyro's Beanie

-Glengarry bonnet

-Scotsman's stove pipe

-Football Helmet

-Officer's Ushanka

-Tough Guy's Toque

-Texas Ten Gallon

-Mining Light

-Engineer's Cap

-Texas Slim's Dome Shine

-Prussian Pickelhaube

-Vintage Tyrolean

-Ritzy Rick's Hair Fixative

-Trophy Belt

-Master's Yellow Belt

-Professional's Panama

-Camera beard (according to Sort by type and Sort by class options)

-Backbiter's billycock

-Fancy fedora

-Camera beard (according to Sort by loadout slot option)

What is the true, wholesome order of the hats according to the "Sort by" options?Tahtorak0 17:11, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

The Camera Beard came out with Set 3, and was then changed to a Misc. So it's technically the 3rd hat. I imagine it sorts based on internal item number or something, I don't know. This may help: All items by number By the way, you can sign your name by just typing ~~~~ at the end of your post. MK 23:52, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

That is not the right order. According to that list, the Fancy Fedora comes before the Backbiter's billycock, while the game switches the positions in all three "Sort by" types. Tahtorak0 03:22, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

On a note, I found out that the reason that the camera beard is listed third according to the Sort by loadout slot option is because the Camera Beard is a misc item, and the Sort by loadout slot option sorts items by primary weapons, secondary weapons, melee weapons, hats, and misc items. Tahtorak0 14:22, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Pictures to the towers?

All pages have a picture of the class wearing the hat, except for the Modest Pile, Noble Amassment and Towering Pillar. Can someone make them? OluapPlayer 22:52, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately our usual picture-taker has become inactive. Your statement is true, the new Community hats need better images too. I will attempt to get on it in the future. Just gotta find the time... Smashman 23:14, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Should the medals that you get from the Tournaments be shown on the hats page? I'm really just curious is all. Über Spycrab 21:11, 13 April 2010 (UTC) 18:25, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps it would be a good idea to judge after we see these medals released first? They're not really hats, but misc items seem to be listed there too. For anyone not in the know. He's talking about the medals that players will receive for either placing first, second or simply participating in the upcoming ETF2L Highlander Public tournament. I personally think they're going to be miscellaneous items, just like the original Gentlemanne's service medal. Infi^ 18:44, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
As Infi says, we'll judge when they're released. They're likely to be though. Also, your signature is not representative of your user name. Please fix it so it is. Smashman 21:09, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
ok, cool Über Spycrab 21:12, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Misc. page

I think that, once enough Misc. items are released, we should give them their own page...or perhaps we should do that now. -- En Ex 20:29, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

There's currently only 3, and the page would be quite sparce. Lets wait. -- Smashman... (tsb) 20:30, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. -- En Ex 20:32, 20 April 2010 (UTC) Done and ready to be uploaded, plus a revision of the hat page with more info and a new list based on surlyuncouth's spiffy checklist. I haven't uploaded it yet because I wanted to see if you guys agree with removing the arbitrary, unofficial and increasingly unwieldy 'set' designations (a whole 'misc' set?). The 'release' information and timeline is all they really need. All the sets do is confuse people looking at the nav template. --Wilsonator 10:29, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I quite like that, but the image on the Misc page, isn't cutout very well... Miscitemspage.png -- Smashman... (tsb) 10:38, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Sure, it can always be changed later, but what about the 'sets' thing? Will anyone miss them? --Wilsonator 14:38, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
That looks great! I agree with you on the set designations too. :D Pilk (talk) 14:41, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
i think you should divide items hats/misc by event and random drop misc items shouldnt have their own page i still see camera beard and surgeon mask as equals to hats --The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ares5566 (talk) • contribs)
The current set up is fine. They're not hats, they're Misc items. -- Smashman... (tsb) 21:09, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Craft the same Hat?

Is it possible to use the 'combine two hats to make a new hat' recipe to craft one of the hats you used in making it? For instance stash + bonk helm= stash? Also, could someone remove the whiskers from this page, and move it to the misc?

No, Valve specifically removed the ability to craft a hat used in the recipe. MK 04:19, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Sweet, thanks a bunch. Über Spycrab 21:14, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Modest pile's picture

IT IS SO TINY! I mean, there's a lot of blank space on the picture, and the hat itself appears very tiny.

I say we should replace it with something bigger. OluapPlayer 00:27, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, it's supposed to be compared with the Noble amassment and Towering pillar, so I think it's fine as is. TheNeotank 00:51, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Class Headgear

If you use 'Fabricate Class Headgear', can you choose which one, or is it random? The article needs to clarify that. I'm still 4 scrap mettle from being able to test... Object In Space 19:23, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

If you are saying that you can choose the hat you get than no you can't the hat will be chosen at random.

Broken links for Demoman and Heavy

I've fixed all the links to the hats for Demoman and Heavy that originally showed as a link to a new page. I just set them to redirect to the correct page, but I think it'd be better in the long term to rename the pages so all words in the title are correctly capitalised. I don't know if the actual hat names were in that format, so I didn't try. I don't even think I have the priveleges required to do so in the first place. SuicidalSkydiver 00:55, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Some vandal Blanked the page and left "Alex Kang" I used a older revision and replaced it :3 --Emperor Pear Head 09:06, 27 August 2011 (EDT)

Currently the all class hats list is lacking many a hat, i also believe there should be a Genuine hat category for the hats that are more unique with the green box.
