Information
The Backburner is an unlockable primary weapon for the Pyro class and replaces the Flamethrower. It is unlocked after 15 of the Pyro achievements are completed (excluding 'Milestone 1'). It is currently placed as a Level 10 Flamethrower in the loadout menu. This version of the flamethrower is built for the Pyro who likes to ambush their opponents. It removes the compression blast capability, instead guaranteeing critical hits whenever it’s used on an opponent from behind. The backburner registers up to approximately a 45 degree angle to the back of someone's left or right. So, roughly a 90 degree angle centered behind where they are facing. This is significantly less than the Spy's backstab range, which appears to be any angle in the 160 degrees behind where a player is looking.
Damage

- Base damage changes over range (actually particle lifetime or travel distance). Round for final damage. X.5 rounds down instead of up. Damage spread, min crits, and critical hits are multiplied before rounding.
- Base: 6.8 per particle from 0 to ~190 units, 6.5 or less at ~230 units, 5.5 or less at ~295 units, 4.5 or less at ~360 units.
- Damage up to ~210 units: 6 to 8 damage per particle (135-180/sec)
- Damage at ~360 units: 4 to 5 per particle (90-112.5/sec)
- After burn damage: 3 damage every 0.5 seconds for 10 seconds (60 damage total), Min Crits cause 4 damage every 0.5 seconds
- Mini-Crit: 1.35 times base, then round to nearest whole (Changes based on distance)
- Critical Hit: 3x base, then round to nearest whole (Changes based on distance)
- DPS at point blank (damage per second): 450
- DPS at ~350 range: 315
Note: Maximum range DPS assumes all particles find victims.
Base damage changes either over particle lifetime or particle travel distance, instead of distance from player. Max range fluctuates to anywhere between ~280 and ~480 units for little known reason, assumed to be caused by latency compensation issues. Damage particle do no not match graphic the graphical particles in behavior or distance (graphic reaches ~290 units). Damages are approximate and determined by community testing.

Trivia
- The Backburner changes its eye color depending on which team you are on. RED makes the eyes turn white while being on BLU team makes the eyes a yellow-ish color.
- The Backburner is just the original Flamethrower with a dragon-painted piece of metal mashed on the original muzzle.
