Critical hit

Overview
A critical hit or crit is an attack that does extra damage, glows your respective team color, and has distinctive sounds both when fired and when hitting a target. When you hit a player with one, the words "critical hit!!!" appear over the target's head in green letters (see image). Critical hits with melee weapons usually have a unique swinging animation to go with it (for example the bottle has an overhead swing).
Critical hits usually deal three times as much damage as a regular hit, and (unlike regular shots) damage does not drop off with distance. [1] Most critical hits do constant damage and do not have a damage range, where as regular hits have random damage. However some weapons critical hits can do less then their base damage, this is called splash damage. According to how far away you are from the epicenter of the blast, the less damage you will take. The weapons with splash damage are rocket launcher, grenade launcher and the sticky launcher.
Some weapons "crit" on a per-shot basis, such as the scattergun, shotgun, revolver, or most melee weapons. Weapons that normally fire quickly with less damage-per-shot will typically "crit" for several successive shots in short duration, such as the pistol, minigun, or flamethrower.
There are two different ways a crit can happen, randomly or ones that are triggered, like a backstab and headshot. They are critical hits, just not the standard type of crit. The Spy's knife can only get a critical hit from a backstab. Most crits do x3 damage, the backstab does 450+ damage (an instant kill). The Sniper's sniper rifle does triggered critical hits from headshots, which do x3 damage. A fully charged headshot does enough damage to kill any class even if they are overhealed (Note that no other weapon does extra damage when fired at an enemy's head).
During humiliation every shot fired by the winning side is a critical hit, including the Blutsauger gun, which normally doesn't crit as well as body shots with the sniper rifle. Supposedly, front stabs with the knife crit during humiliation (due to the visual clue) but don't actually do any additional damage, neither does the Axtinguisher.
All of your shots are critical while ÜberCharged with the Kritzkrieg. This does affect the Blutsauger, but not the sniper rifle, knife or Axtinguisher.
Critical hits are awarded based on random chance at the time the shot is fired, starting at 5% for most weapons. Melee weapons generally have a baseline chance of 10%. The amount of damage dealt by a player over the last 20 seconds can increase the crit chance, up to a maximum of 20% [2]. This "super-crit" period can be extended by continued killing. Additional stats on crits have been gathered by testing done by Redcomet and posted on the Steam Users Forums.
Weapon Exceptions
- The Backburner does critical hit damage when fired into an enemy's back.
- The Axtinguisher will always crit against a burning opponent, and never crit otherwise.
- The K.G.B will have five seconds of guaranteed critical hits after a normal kill that is stackable with more kills by the K.G.B. and will continue for how much time is left if you switch to a different weapon.
Notes
- Buildings are not affected by critical hits.
Trivia
- Although "crit" is short for "Critical hit", the term is often used to apply to critical shots or attacks, whether or not those attacks actually hit or damage anything.
- If you taunt as a Soldier with the Rocket launcher equipped, the soldier will make an "L" sign with his hand while yelling "Cuh-rit".
- Killing someone with a critical rocket will sometimes result in the Soldier yelling: "Cuh-rit".
