The Demoman on occupational hazards

A scotch-swilling, monster-bothering demolitions expert from the Scottish highlands, the Demoman (real name Tavish DeGroot) is one of the more versatile members of the team. Though his weapons lack pinpoint long-range accuracy, the Demoman is a powerful, if unpredictable, asset and can hold his own in just about any situation. He is a master of the explosive, excelling at indirect, mid-range combat. Armed with his Grenade launcher and Sticky bombs, the Demoman uses his good eye and knowledge of the surrounding environment for well timed detonations that send enemies skyward, often in several pieces.

The Demoman, as his name implies, excels at swift disassembly- bouncing his grenades round corners to wreak havoc on enemy sentry gun emplacements while remaining safely out of sight. His sticky bombs are a perfect tool for area denial, keeping opponents well away from any carts, control points and intelligence cases he deems off-limits.

Meet the Demoman

Name: Tavish DeGroot

Country of Origin: Ullapool, Scotland, United Kingdom

Meet the Demoman

Job: House Cleaning

Motto: "Boom Boom Baby"

Emblem:

A fierce temper, a fascination with all things explosive, and a terrible plan to kill the Loch Ness Monster cost the six year old Demoman his original set of adoptive parents. Later, at the Crypt Grammar School for Orphans near Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, the boy's bomb-making skills improved dramatically. His disposition and total number of intact eyeballs, however, did not.

Word of his proficiency with explosives spread, and it was not long before Crypt Grammar received two visitors: Demoman's real parents, who lovingly explained that all Demomen are abandoned at birth until their skills manifest themselves, a longstanding, cruel, and wholly unnecessary tradition among the Highland Demolition Men. His unhappy childhood had ended. But his training had just begun.

Basic Strategy

Main article: Demoman strategy
  • Hit Attack 1 to fire sticky bombs and then use Attack 2 to detonate them later.
  • With the Sticky Bomb Launcher, the longer you hold down the fire button, the farther the shot will go.
  • Set off sticky bombs beneath your feet to pipe bomb jump up to great heights.
  • Shoot sticky bombs onto walls and ceilings where they're hard to spot.

Trivia

  • The Demoman is voiced by Gary Schwartz who also voices The Heavy.
  • The Demoman's real name is Tavish Degroot. He was the first class to have his full name revealed.
  • The Demoman was born to a clan of Scottish Demomen whose motto is "In regione caecorum rex est luscus", which roughly translates as "In the realm of the blind, the one eyed man is king." According to his mother, his father lost both his eyes before he was 30 and maintained 26 jobs until his dying day.
  • The Demoman has 3 jobs, a $5 million salary and lives in a mansion with his blind mother in the Badlands of New Mexico.
  • The Demoman's class emblem is different from the emblem that appears on his sleeve, depicting a lit bomb rather than a stick of dynamite.
  • The Demoman's old trading card Bio is largely the same, except that his original parents are killed rather than his adoptive set.
  • The Demoman is missing his shoulder emblem in the RED main menu splash screen.
  • The Demoman will still drink from his Bottle and belch when it is smashed.
  • The HUD icon of the Demoman is left-handed. The Demoman's patch is also on the wrong eye.
  • The BLU Soldier and the RED Demoman became fast friends after meeting at a projectile weapons expo. They shared many experiences together including deep sea fishing, a trip to Las Vegas and the 'Gravel Pits of America' scenic bus tour. After the Administrator's assistant Miss Pauling brought the matter to her attention (as friendships are forbidden by mercenary contract), the Administrator decided to introduce a little 'healthy competition' to kill their blossoming friendship.
  • The Demoman lost the War waged between him and the Soldier, thus losing out on the chance to use the Gunboats. Technically more Soldiers were killed during the war than Demomen; the scales were tipped in favor of the Soldier by points awarded during the Propaganda Contest.
  • The Demoman is highly sensitive about his missing eye. A trip to the 'Eye Museum' with the BLU Soldier caused the RED Demoman to break into tears.
  • The Demoman is a supporter of the 'Badland Brawlers'.
  • The Demoman is the only class updated thus far to not receive a replacement for his primary weapon slot.
  • The Demoman may still refer to his melee weapon as his bottle of scrumpy with the Eyelander unlockable equipped.
  • The Demoman with the Soldier are the only two classes that do not wear gloves.
  • The Demoman is the only class able to decapitate enemies.
  • The Demoman is the only class without a hitscan weapon.
  • The Demoman is the only class without a weapon that fires Bullets (inclueding the Medic with the Syringe Gun).
