Information

The Equalizer (also known as the Pickaxe) is the unlockable melee weapon for the Soldier. It is a pickaxe whose damage potential is inversely proportional to the user's health. The wielding soldier also gains a boost in speed when his health is low while holding this weapon. Taunting with the Equalizer equipped will result in the Soldier blowing both himself and nearby opponents to smithereens with a deadly grenade. Medics cannot heal a Soldier who is holding out the Equalizer. For its critical hit animation, the Soldier swings the Equalizer in a backhand fashion, hitting his target with the sharp end.

Damage

Scales inversely with health. Approximately 162.5 − 0.65x (162.5 minus 0.65x), where x is the amount of health the player currently has, with a minimum of 33 when the player is at or above 200 health, and a maximum of 162 (before random damage and critical hits).

Health Damage Notes
200 33
150 65 same base damage as Shovel
100 98
58 125 instant-kills an unbuffed light class
50 130
20 150 instant-kills an unbuffed Medic
1 162

Speed

Based on current health. For reference, the 'default' speed of the spy, sniper, engineer and pyro is 300, while the scout's speed is 400.

Health range Speed (units per second) Relative speed increase Notes
161-300 240 0%
121-160 264 10%
81-120 288 20% faster than Demoman
41-80 336 40% faster than Medic
1-40 384 60%

Trivia

  • The Equalizer was first thought of by community members Tom Francis and jibberish. These users received a unique version of the weapon called "The Great Equalizer"[1]
  • The Equalizer was originally a pickaxe issued to American Monkeynaut Poopy Joe for him to "pierce the Vault of Heaven itself" before it was acquired by Mann Co. in entirely innocent circumstances. [2]
  • If a Medic overheals a soldier to 300, and the Soldier quickly switches to the Equalizer and Taunts, he will survive the explosion.
  • This "High Risk, High Returns" weapon can be the strongest melee weapon in the game even when it doesn't crit. With 1 Health left the only Melee weapon that can deal more damage is the Spy's Backstab. However when the Soldier's Health is 200 or more then it's weaker than the Knife from the front and ties with the Axtinguisher against non-burning foes of being the weakest melee weapon in the game.
  • The Equalizer has Developer weapon variants.
  • Many consider the Equalizer to be a straight upgrade to the shovel, as it has almost no downside apart from not being able to be healed by a medic while you have it equipped. Despite the lowered base damage while at full health, very few Soldiers will equip the Shovel, due to the Soldier's melee weapon being used mainly as a last-ditch weapon.
  • The Equalizer's speed increase still effects you in Humiliation, even if you are on the losing team.
