Information
The Flamethrower is the primary weapon of the Pyro. The Flamethrower's range is very limited, however it deals massive damage through this entire range. Apart from the direct damage, the Flamethrower also sets your target on fire, causing the target to continue to burn for a short time when no longer being fired upon. Pyros themselves are vulnerable to the direct damage but not to the afterburn, due to their flame-retardant suits. The afterburn can be extinguished by the Medic's Medigun, a Dispenser's healing stream, contact with water, or any type of Health pack.
Note that the weapon fires as a stream and takes time to reach maximum range, especially when turning. It consumes 12.5 units of ammunition every second.
The weapon is listed as a Level 1 Flamethrower on the loadout menu.
Compressed Air
Using the alt-fire button, the flamethrower is able to produce a blast of compressed air which will push your opponents away and even deflect incoming projectiles. This ability is incredibly useful, allowing the Pyro to blow away sticky bomb carpets, separate a Medic from his medic buddy and hold his own against a Soldier in close quarters. The blast itself is a sphere-shaped "explosion" that occurs directly on the end of the flamethrower. It's a momentary blast, so it requires careful timing to execute, and it consumes 25 flamethrower ammo on each use.
This special ability is able to deflect sticky bombs, grenades, rockets, flares and even sentry gun rockets.Rockets within the area of effect are redirected so that they will impact on the nearest surface that is under the Pyro's crosshairs. Sticky bombs are rolled outwards from the Pyro.
Generally, reflected projectiles change their team and can be thought of as "re-fired" by the pyro, only able to damage the Pyro and his enemies. Sticky bombs are an exception, and will still be under the color and control of the Demoman who fired them. However, the Pyro will get credit if the enemy Demoman blows himself up by activating them.
