With the Sandman equipped, the Scout loses 15 health points, but gains the ability to stun opponents with his trusty baseball. By taking an initial swing with the Sandman with a baseball in hand, the Scout will bat it forward in an arc. If it connects with an opponent from long range, they will be knocked back a short distance and the letters 'BONK' will float above their head. This is coupled with a 'seeing stars' effect as they remain dazed for several seconds. A stunned opponent cannot move or attack. Heavies spinning their mini-guns will continue to spin when stunned (whether the left or right mouse button is pressed).. The shot will only stun when it hits a victim from long range (the distance needed to gain the Moon Shot achievement). Any baseballs that hit an opponent from less than that distance will instead force them into a 3rd person fleeing state but move at 50% of their default movement speed. Getting hit by a ball will always damage you.
The Scout can perform the stun ability once every fifteen seconds unless he manually retrieves the baseball just used, picks up the baseball of another Scout or visits a resupply cabinet. New baseballs cannot be retrieved from ammo packs or dropped weapons.
The baseballs of enemy Scouts can be struck back at them and upon a successful return will stun them. Doing this results in the Beanball achievement.
The initial stab of the Sniper's Arrow taunt attack also has a stun effect, as does the Medic's Ubersaw taunt.

- Note that critical hits add 2 seconds to the normal stun duration.
- Mini crits do not affect stun duration.
Strategy
- The stun effect provides the perfect set-up for the slow but deadly Bonk kill taunt, allowing you to net the Out of the Park achievement. However, the stun effect wears out before the taunt animation is completed, giving the enemy a chance to escape.
- A baseball to the head can stop an Engineer repairing long enough for your teammates to finish off an annoyingly placed sentry gun.
- Scouts can't stun an übercharged opponent with the Sandman, but the Arrow stab taunt from the Sniper's Huntsman can. Ubercharged enemies are often distracted or keeping their aim at a sentry gun, long enough to stab them with the taunt. Even without damage, it will waste precious seconds of übercharge.
