Flamethrower Testing
You can use the convar tf_debug_flamethrower to see how much damage the flamethrower does. According to my testing, it takes 16 seconds to empty a tank of 200 ammo, producing 360 particles of flame. Each particle does 4 damage at maximum distance, and 6.8 damage point-blank. Damage falloff is linear. 22.5 particles are fired each second. If all of them hit up close, the flamethrower does 153 damage per second, plus afterburn damage.
You can, in fact, do fractional amounts of damage. It takes 43 particles of 6.8 damage each to kill a 300-health heavy. These particles do 292.4 damage. It takes two seconds to fire this many flame particles, allowing the afterburn to add an extra 10 damage. If the damage was rounded up or down on impact, I'd need to hit the heavy with more or fewer particles.
I've also determined by counting 6.8 damage particles that crit flames do exactly 3 times as much damage as non-crit. Here are my numbers: 300 hp - 15 particles; 200 hp - 10 particles; 175 hp - 9 particles; 150 hp - 8 particles; 125 hp - 7 particles. This puts the top end damage of crit fire at 459 per second. Updated
Added some info on the air blast's actual in-game interpretation and updated the damage values. Damage reduction at range has been removed in latest patch, as per patchnotes. Mudkip 02:05, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- this was corrected in this patch. reintroduced damage falloff... http://www.tf2wiki.net/wiki/July_1%2C_2008_Patch -The Unbeholden 09:14, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Falloff damage correct or not?
A small discrepency I notice is that in the most recent change to the Flamethrower, Valve stated that the falloff was 50% at max range, but according to this page, it's more like 75%. Has the damage even been tested since that update? --Harbl Gentleman 21:48, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- http://www.tf2wiki.net/wiki/June_19%2C_2008_Patch - Removed Flamethrower's damage falloff (was falling off to 25% by the end)
- http://www.tf2wiki.net/wiki/July_1%2C_2008_Patch - Added back some damage falloff to the Pyro's flamethrower. Not nearly as extreme as it was before the Pyro class pack.
- which seems that you may be right Harbl. "If" the damage falloff is 50%, (which there is no link to this so called statement) The current page shows damage falling off to 75% and will remain this way until someone does many accurate tests. The Unbeholden 09:14, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
