Include "Team Player" Article
I was thinking of adding a new article. IDK whether it'll be called "Team Player" or not but it'll be something similar. In the article I was going to put general player tactics and strategies that every good player should know. A sort of "How to be a good player" page. We talk about what's needed to be a good player (reflexes, skill, communication, etc...). What do you guys think? What should it be called? Should I make an article like that?--CountDOODOO 22:06, 13 March 2008 (CDT)
- If there are enough "bullet points" that aren't covered by material in the other articles but are worthy of mention, then I don't see why not. I'd just be worried about redundancy. Or, a page like this would be a good springboard to other articles such as Voice chat and Sniper_strategy.. I'm for it, I'm just having trouble visualizing what's going to go on it. Maybe go ahead and set up an orphaned article and we can start massaging it? (hope that's a valid idea) --Wipnum 00:33, 14 March 2008 (CDT)
- Yes good idea a team tactics or team play page / section would be good, at present the advice is class specific (apart from the medic), somewhere to put tactics like flanking, co ordinating uber pushes with a spy sapping etc, teaming up a medic with a pyro and a heavy, the demo / soldier barrage followed by a scout rush with a heavy behind are all good team play.--mark"d"davis 04:29, 14 March 2008 (CDT)
- I made it. Go check it out at How to be a team player. Needs massive edits.--CountDOODOO 05:41, 14 March 2008 (CDT)
Include the Developer Commentary
Do you think we should try to include a few articles on the developer commentary? It would be pretty useful for people if they wanted to know what's in them. We should say what maps have the developer commentary and a summation of what each node says. Any comments?--CountDOODOO 15:34, 1 December 2007 (CST)
I may transcribe the developer commentary sometime soon, since it can all be found in the gcf files. Don't know if we need to specify what map they're on though.--Wilsonator 03:56, 19 December 2007 (CST)
Archived
Old information has been put into a collapsable table (defaulted to collapsed) for archiving purposes. When it gets big enough, we'll move it to a seperate page, or just get rid of it :P -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 12:00, 11 December 2007 (CST)
- Moved to a formal archive, see above. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 08:13, 19 December 2007 (CST)
PC Server Limit
Apparently the server limit is 32 but I see servers with 100 limits or 255 limits. Whats up with this?-DontEatRawHagis 16:49, 11 December 2007 (CST)
- The PC server limit is 24, but people have found a way to get other servers listed in the game browser via hex editing one of the server dll files. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 16:57, 11 December 2007 (CST)
- Going to have to dispute this if I've understood what your saying. There are quiet a few 32 user server already public and private I've seen 128 max users. --Aurora 18:25, 11 December 2007 (CST)
- I'll go slow... The default server maximum, as in the value Valve allows you to set when creating a server, is 24. A group of people have been hex editing the server.dll file to get them to allow for bigger servers. [1]
- There is no way, without hex editing dll files, to run a server over 24 players :P -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 07:43, 12 December 2007 (CST)
- Explain then how I am able to play 16 on 16 matches. I know there 16 on 16 because of the score board. Also when i entered a 255 server that was suppose to have 100 people already on it only 6 people were there. DontEatRawHagis 16:46, 12 December 2007 (CST)
- Try and follow... The person who hosts the server uses hex-edited versions of server.dll file to increase the 'max players' limit on the server. They use a second hex-edited dll (manager.dll I believe, but I could be wrong here) to get the server to show up in the steam game list. Without editing the servers, there is no way to make a server over 24 players. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs)
It finally happened :P TF2 Wiki has seen 500,000 page views. See Special:Statistics! -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 10:14, 12 December 2007 (CST)
- Now 606,000 - That means there's over 100,000 page views a week now O_O --Aurora 11:57, 19 December 2007 (CST)
- Congratulations are in order for reaching 1 million page views. The target figure was hit sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning 13/14th January, which means traffic is still increasing! Well done all contributors and here's to 2 million, cheers :) --Aurora 10:55, 14 January 2008 (CST)
- The community scripts page of this wiki was articled in last month's PC gamer (UK) magazine id guess that a lot of traffic came from that--markdeadlydavis 10:47, 15 January 2008 (CST)
- Really? wow, props to PC Gamer then, I'll have to get me a copy of that. --Aurora 11:05, 15 January 2008 (CST)
- That is very cool, props to everyone who has contributed so far to the entire site! If anyone does have a copy (or gets one), I'd love to see a scan of the article or similar! --Nos 12:13, 15 January 2008 (CST)
Hmm... strange
There's a weird 'clump' of tabled text beneath the main page that says something about recent chnages and rss feeds. It looks kinda jumbled.
Also an idea I had was that we replace the new articles section with a 'Did you Know' or a 'How to' Section--Wilsonator 15:23, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- Those are xml rss feeds for the appropriate pages (new pages, and recent changes respectfully), and really should stay there. I'll remove some of the extra white space at the bottom though.
- As far as the featured article section, I personally think it should stay the way it is. It's not a random article, it's an article that's very well written, and should be read. Hence why it gets a special place on the front page for a while. I'm actually in the middle of writing the documentation and procedures for these, so reserve judgment on them for a few days while we finish ironing them out :P -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 15:26, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- They don't need to be there, I just included them last time I update it. Users can look at the special pages and find the same information if they want, I just added them for quick reference if anyone wanted an RSS feed to keep up to date with the latest updates. I did set them small as to not distract, but if theres a problem with display I've overlooked I can remove them? --Aurora 15:50, 17 December 2007 (CST)
- Update: I see the problem in IE6, now removed ["We apologise for the fault in the subtitles. Those responsible have been sacked." - Monty Python] --Aurora 16:06, 17 December 2007 (CST)
Include a "Latest News" Section?
We should include a "Latest News" Section on the Main Page. It will just give a very short description of some Valve or TF2 news. For example, I know that the PC and 360 versions of TF2 are getting an update and new maps before Christmas. That right there would count as news. Many other wiki's already have them (ie: Wikipedia). What do you think?--CountDOODOO 07:08, 18 December 2007 (CST)
- For starters... There's been NO confirmation of new maps before christmas. They have said they're coming, but not when. What IS coming before christmas are the new achivements (supposedly), but you know with Valve time and all that... Anyway, on to your suggestion, while it's a good idea, I don't really see a good spot for it on the page, I suppose we could cut the featured article/latest pages to only take up 1/3 each and put it there, but that might be too small. -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 07:53, 18 December 2007 (CST)
Include a link to suggestions for future patches
If this is possible that is. I am finding alot of things in TF2 that could've been changed in patches or prior to release. Overall it's a wonderful game, but I was wondering if there is a link for further suggestions to Valve/Steam for future patches and if there is, to put it on the front page. -- Jewbat 03:47, 23 January 2008 (CST)
Similarities to
Noticed the soldier - hartman and spy to gman comments perhaps a Character sources section with an intro like. The soldier has many similarities to Hartman from .. other similar characters are drill instrucotrs in every war film ever watched. The spy draws heavily on early james bond however some similarities exist between him and Sierras stablemate the gman from half life etc--mark"d"davis 06:58, 25 January 2008 (CST)
Questions
I'll delete this after I get some sort of answer, but I have no where else to turn. Is there a page for asking questions in general on Team Fortress 2?
I.E. Does anyone know if the extra maps and unlockable weapons will be on consoles? If not, is there someone who knows I can ask? -- Jewbat
- We don't really have general discussion pages, it has been mentioned about adding them to the Community portal but not implemented yet. CountDOODOO is our 360 man and might be able to answer this with more confidence (I'm sure he's been reading more about it than I have) but from what I've heard (rumors and unconfirmed posts on forums) they won't be available on consoles initially. Whether they do plan to eventually add them I couldn't say, although at the rate the patches are released on consoles I suspect it will be some time if they do (the PS3 version took an additional two months to be released!). --Aurora 22:04, 29 January 2008 (CST)
- I thought as much. As long as they release them, I'm alright with it. I can deal with a pause in it, just not a full out, shut down of new material. Also, how do you make your tag at the end of your message do the date and whatnot? --Jewbat
Teamwork
I know we have team ballance on some map pages but feel the need to add some general tips on team working / character selection. It would be somewhere to say that in many games of TF2 you get individuals working alone to achieve a common aim. Good team balance and working together can prevent the lone hero type of play (this comes from mainly playing FPS and not team play). eg We know the heavy medic combo works well but if they have a pyro for company its a potential defense breaker. It could include screen shots of how to tell at a glance who is on your team and as what as ie press "," etc what do you think ?--mark"d"davis 03:46, 4 February 2008 (CST)
New weapons
Can we add a section on the new weapons mentioned by VALVe and update it evry time there is something new? It will be really intresting...starting with the "Overhealer" for the Medic... --The_Scorpion 13:21, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Changes to main page
I just changed the layout of the main page to allow for more official maps (3 open spots total, one taken by badlands, and another to be taken by goldrush, leaving 1 open). I should have also fixed the page for people using low horizontal resolutions (<1024), so it should all fit on one page now ^_^ If you notice anything wonky with the page in any browser (only tested it on firefox atm), please leave a comment here, and I'll fix it. With that said I'm already aware of the fact that the badlands image is a placeholder, and the fact that the item pick ups section is too close to the main help section. --WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 15:15, 14 February 2008 (CST)
Should there be a gmod page
I think there should.-BR6
- This wiki isn't about GMod --Aurora 03:19, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

Is this Protected?
I noticed at the top of this page is a template that says this page is protected, but if it was, the tap at the top would say "Unprotect". Should I (or any other with protection privileges) protect this page?--TFT Magic Kukri 14:58, 25 March 2008 (CDT)
- Not really sure... do we generally want discussion pages protected? The main page is protected, which is a good thing IMHO. --Nos 16:04, 25 March 2008 (CST)
Slow loading times for TF2 Wiki
I noticed occasionally the TF2 Wiki will take a long time to load when making edits or just simply changing pages. I've tried it on many other computers with faster internet connection speeds and it still occasionally goes slow. Is there a reason why this happens? It can't be because this site is being hosted on a Canadian server... could it?--TFT Magic Kukri 14:58, 25 March 2008 (CDT)
- It could be a few things. Its hosted on a virtual machine at a reasonably sized hosting company. The pipe is big, and the guy who does the hosting for us recently increased the memory in it. Generally speaking, the box is never under any real load, so its tough to say what the issue is, though I have noticed it as well. There's a few cron jobs that run, that may create a slight slow down, I'll look at nice'ing them which may help, Overall, considering the traffic it gets, I'm pretty happy with it right now, considering its a relatively free setup.--Nos 16:05, 25 March 2008 (CST)
I heard there was a lot of stress on the main page. These images reduce the size per class pic by about 3kb each. Every little bit counts? [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] --MoQ 13:41, 7 May 2008 (CDT)
- I appreciate the work you've done, but I'm not sure really how I want to proceed at this point. I'd really like to drop to one image, either by using an image map to link to each class directly, or to just have the whole image link to the Class page, same idea with maps. Slightly smaller files might help, but reducing the number of files overall will help more. -Nos 15:05, 7 May 2008 (CST)
- It only took a second, and moving all the images into one big grid turned out kinda ugly format-wise, but this'll save about 20KB (Total for all class images: 81.16KB). Of course, we should probably work on the layout or design a bit, but just moving them all into one big image seems to save a bit of bandwidth. Think we should keep moving in a mono-image direction? A community design for the image would be the best route, I think. High Quality Grid - 63.52KB [11] Low Quality Grid - 50.13KB [12]
- Also, I just noticed that our background [13] is 7kb and isn't really noticeable. Scrap it maybe? --MoQ 14:28, 8 May 2008 (CDT)
- Its not so much the size of the images (though reducing them will help) but the number of images. Each image requires a separate call to the webserver. That's what's causing the load, at least as far as I can tell. The best option overall might be a redesign of the front page where we have one image for all the classes, and one for all the maps. I'm certainly open to suggestions, I'm by no means a master of html/css. --Nos 11:00, 12 May 2008 (CST)
Copy Editing Template
FYI: I've created a template to denote articles in need of copy editing. It might be a good idea to include a link to the category page on the front page. -beep 01:10, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
'Did you Know?' section instead of Newest articles?
Since the newest articles section doesn't seem to automate itself anyway, I think a DYK section would be pretty cool in it's place. There's plenty of fun little facts about TF2, some of which are not relevant to any existing articles but interesting nonetheless and a section like that would be the perfect place for them.
Anyone with me? --Wilsonator 01:28, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- I like the idea. --Nos 20:49, 10 June 2008 (CST)
- Ok, I got it up and running and we now have a 'Did you Know?' section. Seems to be working nicely. =)
- Since I don't know how to do any fancy scripts that make the facts rotate automatically, i've done it the way the Smashwiki does it and made it show five facts at a time, which can be manually switched with the next five facts in the hidden list here whenever we get bored of seeing the same facts day after day.
- Everyone feel free to add any interesting facts and tips at the end of the 'Currently Unused Facts' section. Just make sure they're true! --Wilsonator 22:31, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
- Very nicely done! --Nos 15:45, 11 June 2008 (CST)
Is it possible to sort the links in the 'Wanted Pages' page?
Since the wanted pages is so full of translation and custom map requests, it's pretty hard to find regular articles that need to be added or links that need to be fixed. Is there any way to sort wanted pages into 'sections' for translation, maps etc.?--Wilsonator 01:30, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
General Topics
I dont know how to change them, buit they need cleaned up and easier to read. Maybe a vertical list or just less topics. Combine The PS3 and 360 diffrences under "home console", please.--Darke 21:43, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
