? will be the last time...

In the last one, the spy takes a different "dialect", and he does say "Zis" :P

Here is it in wav format :P --Tarhar 18:52, 5 February 2008

I disagree. The Spy speaks in a very bad Basque accent (but most of the characters have problems with their accents, anyway). He does say "This;" if he put a Z on the front of it, it would come out with a long E sound, like "zees." --Southpaw018 13:54, 5 February 2008 (CST)
Does sound like this to me, too. --Zaps 18:06, 5 February 2008 (CST)
I'll agree with Zaps here... it sounds like "this" If you pop the wave into an audio program and loop the first part of it, you can hear the 'th' sound. It's accented, but it isn't Zis, the 'th' sound is at the beginning. --WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 22:57, 5 February 2008 (CST)

Oh, ok maybe your right :P --The_Scorpion 11:48, 6 February 2008 (CST)

Sound files

I found all those same "Unknown Responses" at this website right here. The website includes other unknown responses as well. Should we upload those into the other response lists?--CountDOODOO 11:26, 16 February 2008 (CST)

I know, if you have a PC version (not from Steam) you will find them in "Orange Box Games\tf\sound\vo\taunts" --The_Scorpion 11:45, 16 February 2008 (CST)

I don't have the PC version unfortunately. I got the 360 one and you can't check the sounds in the 360. But I compared the two from soundboard.com and the ones we've got listed. They match. So, I think I'll go add them to each section.--CountDOODOO 13:31, 16 February 2008 (CST)
I'm not sure on the legality of publicly providing any part of the games content on the wiki. When I checked I couldn't find any specific copyright notices, just the general 'All contents copyright Valve' etc. I might post a message on the steam forums and see if Valve responds. --Aurora 05:59, 18 February 2008 (CST)
Other websites are putting it...so...I am ready to link every response to its sound link...I'm just waiting for your signal :P... --The_Scorpion 12:26, 22 February 2008 (CST)
I think I'll go ahead and message Valve (kerry@valvesoftware.com). Maybe they can tell us whether it's allowed or not. You guys should do it too just in case they don't reply back to me. EDIT: I have just e-mailed John Kerry. I hope he can respond back to me. I'm sure he's busy right now with GDC though.--CountDOODOO 14:28, 22 February 2008 (CST)

We've got a little trouble here. I messaged Kerry asking for an update from their legal department and here's his message. Turns out I can't answer your other question, sorry. :) I told him to ask his Legal Dept. and he said he did, so IDK why he said "I" and not "We". Maybe I'm just looking at it too closely. But either way, I don't know what to do. He said he didn't know. We could upload those sound files and I believe everything will be fine. It's your call guys (Mostly Nos' though). So guys, what are your opinions on this?--CountDOODOO 17:30, 29 February 2008 (CST)

Personally I believe copyright issues should be avoided by getting clarity before having the website shut down because of infringement; however this attitude seems to be looked at as 'anally retentive' by some. So at this time, I'm no longer going to comment on the copyright issue of use of images/sounds/other media on the TF2 Wiki, I will defer the question to Nos. --Aurora 17:59, 29 February 2008 (CST)
Message Nos? Quick someone do it! I hope he's on so he can check this out because I'd really like to get this straightened out. I think having the WAV files would DRAMATICALLY improve the quality of the responses article but I would hate to see this site shut down b/c of my...lack of patience. I'll wait until he comes on. Oh, I was going to ask you if there was some way to cite Valve in the article so we avoid it but I see you're no longer going to comment and those issues.--CountDOODOO 19:11, 29 February 2008 (CST)
I'm not commenting on copyright issues, citations are a good thing. What were you planning on citing? I can steal some cite templates off 'pedia but there's a lot of them...--Aurora 19:31, 29 February 2008 (CST)
Is there someway to cite Valve at all? Just say something like, "All soundfiles are product of Valve. Copyright Valve." I'm not too familiar with citing things like these, just simple things one would do in a research paper.--CountDOODOO 19:37, 29 February 2008 (CST)

I read in this article

However, no use is presumptively "fair." Courts examine four factors in deciding whether a specific use is a "fair use": The purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is commercial or of a non-profit, educational nature.

So we could in-fact upload them since this is a non-profit organization and its educational in nature. Aurora, please try to respond to this. Give an opinion at least. Don't shy away, this is a good chance for this wiki to improve dramatically. What do ya say?--CountDOODOO 12:10, 1 March 2008 (CST)

Alas, this isn't a legal 501 (c) non profit organization. Nos, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think so. However, we could probably display a very small amount of Valve's content as long as it's highly relevant to the article, as long as there are no other alternatives for that content, and as long as the purpose is to educate others about TF2. The thing we're looking for here is de minimis. We want to display some of the content, but not enough to be a concern to Valve. Note: IANAL. Side note on this same issue: The Spy vs. Spy crap needs to be removed. --Southpaw018 13:09, 1 March 2008 (CST)
SO! What are we going to do? Are we going to add them all, some of them, maybe just the taunt ones? Or maybe not upload them at all? If you give me permission, I'd love to go ahead an upload those soundfiles. C'mon guys. What do ya say?--CountDOODOO 18:38, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Sorry for taking so long to comment on this... I don't read all the changes, I just try and scan through looking for inappropriate content. If you really need me, hit my talk page and I'll see it a lot sooner. Anyways, on with the topic at hand. As much as I would love to have this content, I'm not sure the case can be made for it. First, the wiki is hosted in Canada, so we need to abide by Canadian copyright laws. [[1]] is a brief overview, and a section on fair use. As Southpaw018 said, this is not a registered non-profit organization. As such, we can't really play into that. Yes, the primary role of this wiki is educational, but we are not a registered educational institution either. As for de minimis, that's not really the way I want to go. I'd much rather have Valve's cooperation, then to fly just low enough under the radar that we won't be shut down. Referring to the article I linked to on Canadian copyright laws, quoting a few lines of the article in a research paper (fair dealing); is considered not infringement. So, if we were to include a few sound clips here and there, I don't think it would be a problem. However, including them all would go beyond that, something I'm not comfortable with, at least without Valve's permission. In that respect, I've emailed Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing for Valve. I'll try and get some clarification for us. --Nos 08:19, 6 March 2008 (CST)

Good move Nos. I'd love to see them on the wiki, but with copyright it's best to err on the side of caution (look at Napster ;p). I don't think Valve will have problems with us using them to be honest. Valve are good like that, they allow code snippets and all their wiki stuff to be used publicly, it's just a case of getting through the red tape which is most of the problem with getting say-so's from large companies. --Aurora 09:23, 6 March 2008 (CST)
I've messaged John Kerry before about this. The first time I asked whether it is legal to upload those sounds and he said that he couldn't answer my question. So I asked him again if I had Valve's permission to upload them onto the wiki and he never responded. He hasn't responded to any of my e-mail's either. Maybe I annoyed him because I asked too many hard questions about TF2's design process. I've messaged him mostly through Xbox LIVE and I guess LIVE is kinda an informal messaging service. Stupid me.  :( Either way, I hope you get more luck than I did.--CountDOODOO 13:56, 6 March 2008 (CST)

360/PC responses

Is it possible to denote which responses occur only on the PC? I play the 360 version and have not heard many of them even though I play the spy a lot. This might be something to do for all the classes.

Also, I once heard the spy say "Magnificent!" somewhere around the second cap on Dustbowl. There was a lot of chaos then, so I'm not sure what triggered it. *EDIT* - It's a defense response.

"well played!" - revenge kill. 360 only?

Was probably in response to something else, not in the least because it doesn't make sense in the context. --Wilsonator 20:14, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I heard it again and it definitely wasn't in response to something else. - Cranberry Jerk
