A few Questions

I've got a few questions if you don't mind Aurora.

  • Is it possible to put a link in an article that leads to another section in that same article?
  • Where should I put new discussion topics in a discussion page? At the top or the bottom?
  • Is the How to be a team player article ready to be put up on the "Newest Articles" section of the main page? I think it's just about done. I worked on finishing it up. If it is, please let me do it. I kinda wanna be a show off with it.  :)
  • Should I do internal citation for any articles? I got ideas from my How to be a team player from a few sites yet i put my work in my own words. I don't know if i should cite it.

Thanks.--CountDOODOO 16:12, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

  1. Yes, if you have a section called mysection then the link would be [[#mysection]]. You can also link to sections on other articles by appending the page name, ex. section= mysection, article= myarticle - within another article you can use [[myarticle#mysection]] and it will open the page and scroll down to the section for you.
  2. Traditionally, at the bottom, that's where I usually look first and I think naturally others do too. That's how it's done on other wiki's so I just followed what I saw
  3. I think so yeah, but I've had an idea to tie all the strategy pages together and create a navigation box for them. Should finish it tomorrow (unless I'm busy at work), the articles and categories needed re-organizing as well so I was doing this at the same time. I'll send you a message when I've finished them, though you'll probably see the changes in the recent changes.
  4. If the work is original enough to be considered your own work then no need to. You are perfectly within fare dealings legal acts to take parts of other works, even if they are copyright, and use them within your own. The problem lies in when you use too much and plagiarize the whole work. Cite it if in doubt, consider it a tip of the hat for others work. --Aurora 20:07, 17 March 2008 (CDT)
Oh, also, I'm going to move the article to "Team strategy", unless you have any objections? --Aurora 20:10, 17 March 2008 (CDT)
Sounds like a good idea. But some of it contains info about how to improve your own performance. What should we do about that? Will that be a problem if its in Team Strategy?--CountDOODOO 21:35, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

Yes, I'm kinda stuck now after the recent edits, it's no longer 'how to be a team player', it's not about team play anymore, I don't know what it's supposed to be now....?? It's like 'How to play computer games', I think this needs reviewing and someone deciding what it's intended aim is and just stick to that, it's way too broad now to be considered a wiki article, it's more like an essay. --Aurora 10:29, 18 March 2008 (CDT)

About Images and Copyrights

So Aurora, will we be having to go through each and every image in this wiki and trying to get official copyright status on them all? Don't worry. I'll help, of course. I'd just like to know what's next on our TF2wiki to/do list.--CountDOODOO 17:12, 11 March 2008 (CDT)

No, images that are already on the wiki were uploaded before implementing any policies (actually there still isn't any policies) so they will just need marking to indicate such. The licenses are still not mandatory, but it should be considered 'best practice' to apply licenses and author details. No complaints have been received (afaik) about copyright disputes on any images currently on TF2 Wiki; however, I'd rather do the work and address the issue now before any complaints come in. Copyright is not usually an issue on small scale websites because they simply go unnoticed but TF2 Wiki has just clocked 2,000,000 page views so can't really be considered small scale. You've probably noticed (by watching the recent changes) that I tend to do a lot of background work that is generally invisible to everyday users rather than article contributions, I always have but that's just what I like doing and doesn't mean any big changes are coming. If there are, then they will be public discussed and instructions provided, so basically, don't worry about stuff I'm doing in the background until any policies have been agreed and put in place. Having said that, I have just wrote the Help:Uploading images‎ article which includes instructions on how to apply licenses so if you want to have a read and apply them to any future images you upload, that would be grand (it's only clicking a drop down box). --Aurora 19:37, 11 March 2008 (CDT)

Naming Conventions Question

Hey Aurora. I was thinking about adding in an article titled "The Orange Box" because Team Fortress 2 was packaged in it but I don't know how to make this article when following the naming conventions. I know I gotta keep everything else lowercase but what about for this. It's a title of a licensed video game. Would this get some kind of exception? Are there any exceptions for naming conventions? Thanks in advance.--CountDOODOO 13:12, 28 February 2008 (CST)

Yes absolutely, it is a title so it should be capitalized. The articles title would be, as you say The Orange Box. As the "The" part is also part of the title it will still be capitalized in running text, which if it's title was just Orange Box, it wouldn't. Confusing I know but that's what The Chicago Manual of Style recommends and they specialize in such things so I will defer to them on most things. They cover it in their FAQ's in a question on the Who - http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/CMS_FAQ/CapitalizationTitles/CapitalizationTitles39.html
I did the same on the Control Point podcast article because that's also a title --Aurora 13:41, 28 February 2008 (CST)

Cleanup and Style

D'oh! So sorry! I didn't see the style guide and was going by intuition and what I saw as the prevalent stylings within the articles I'd seen. I'll start fixing things up right away... thanks for the heads-up!

Not a problem, I've already amended some back. --Aurora 12:32, 3 January 2008 (CST)

Thanks for correcting my works on Scout Rush. =]

Your English is very stylish!

I have to work harder to learn the style on English :)

That's ok, your English is better than some English born people I know :) I hope I got your intentions correct with the double jump part. --Aurora 06:07, 24 January 2008 (CST)

Medic images

Thank you! I went to upload the first corrected image just now and you beat me by 3 minutes. I owe you a beer. :) --Southpaw018 19:34, 29 January 2008 (CST)

Ooops, I thought you'd gave up on them, sorry if I wasted your time if you converted them all again, it's a bit of a labourious task. --Aurora 19:40, 29 January 2008 (CST)
No worries. I got distracted by TV. I'm using VTFEdit, which doesn't yet support VTF 7.4, so I opened the files up and changed the version to 7.3 (7.4 is identical to 7.3 except for a spec change). It has a handy dandy "convert whole folder" function after that, though, and I'm guessing Nem will have a new version of VTFEdit out soon. Thanks again! --Southpaw018 20:06, 29 January 2008 (CST)
Lol, same wavelength indeed, I just posted an update reply to WanderingFox on how to degrade the version in the discussion page ;) --Aurora 20:11, 29 January 2008 (CST)

Thanks

Thanks for the information on the four tilde's. I have always been using 3 which I thought was the norm....

Three = just your sig, four = sig and timestamp. --WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 18:05, 30 January 2008 (CST)

No Edit Section

Aurora, why do you torment me by making your talk page noeditsectoned :P -- WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 18:05, 30 January 2008 (CST)

Because the collapsable boxes cause issues when I have it on, fix them and I'll remove it :P
Actually I don't need them any more because all the stuff is old enough to archive so I'll remove it now --Aurora 05:43, 31 January 2008 (CST)

Page Protection

Yourself and WanderingFox now have "protect" permissions. You can protect and unprotect pages as you see fit. If you think others should have the permission, please let me know. --Nos 08:56, 12 February 2008 (CST)

New Main Page Layout

Updated the main page to have a second row of map images (and also to fix the resolution problem for people on 1024x768). Couple things though... Is there any reason we have the 'general topics' section split into two cells? Can I just colspan them together, or was there a purpose for them being separate? Also, I moved the item pick ups section under the help section, but couldn't get the spacing right, I ended up just using a dirty hack to get it correct (there's a blank 5px high table between the pick ups section and the help section atm :P) Do you know of a more proper way to fix it? --WanderingFox (Talk • Contribs) 16:07, 14 February 2008 (CST)

destroying sapped buildings

Hiya as that tip has appeared twice now i reckon it will appear again at some point. I added a section on reasons not to destroy sapped buildings. I did this without saying why you would want to destroy sapped buildings. What do you think ?--mark"d"davis 10:50, 18 February 2008 (CST)

Good idea, I'll fess up and say that I destroy my buildings, but only in humiliation :) Also, I've left the comment in about looking at your PDA because it is normal behaviour but a lot of people (including myself) that play Engy a lot don't even see the PDA on the HUD, all my builds are mapped to my keypad so it takes a fraction of a second to destroy all my buildings - 9,6,3,. boom, gone :p
Ta ..I really must get some scripts up and running and change some key configs, but it means reading and doing the how to bits first --mark"d"davis 06:40, 19 February 2008 (CST)

was it you who broke the wiki / demoman strat

did you break it again ? ?? can you have a look at the demoman strat i did some work on it today which you may miss ta --mark"d"davis 09:54, 27 February 2008 (CST)

What do you mean by 'break it'? I haven't changed the article today at all, I only added the cleanup template yesterday afternoon. I am doing some rather complex changes which maybe affecting perfomance, but I can't see any issues with the demoman strategy. --Aurora 10:02, 27 February 2008 (CST)
had some acces issues earlier and when i got back in saw you had done some of that complex wiki stuff and assumed that was why. Does the demoman look tidy enough to remove the needs cleaning up flag ?--mark"d"davis 10:24, 27 February 2008 (CST)
Yeah, I'm making some changes to templates and when they are used a lot like the Language template the wiki has to then go through all the articles and invalidate and recreate the internal cache which tends to have a huge impact of the server. It took me four attempts to just to make one change adding only 19 characters :/ Nothing I can do about this I'm afraid, we don't use bots at the minute, which is (I beleive) how wikipedia cope with the mass changes.
The Demoman article looks a lot better but some things still need doing, mainly cosmetic like capitalizing the class names, link spreading and such. Nothing big but I'll leave the template on for the moment so I can easily find it (it's getting quite difficult to find articles which need reviewing). Unless you want to have another look at it, the style guide covers everything (I hope) that needs doing to it but like I said, it's only minor things now, thanks and good work. --Aurora 10:53, 27 February 2008 (CST)
thank you ill go back to it (soonish) and tidy it up some more unless someone beats me to it--mark"d"davis 11:09, 27 February 2008 (CST)

wiki tasks and featured article

Nice list very usefull ive bookmarked it allready, it would be a good one to replace the help part on the front page, also on the front page the featured article gets a little stale perhaps previous featured articles could be rotated ?--mark"d"davis 09:35, 28 February 2008 (CST)

It will be added next time I update the front page, for the moment I have added it to the Community page. I'm intending to remove the Help the wiki section on he front page and replace it with a simple link to the tasks page. That should free up some space and give more things for people to do, the tasks are getting quite numerous now and couldn't all be fitted into the little box.
The featured article has already been mentioned and WF should be looking to update it soon. His (understandable) problem is that people don't nominate articles so he has to spend time digging through articles to find something acceptable. That is probably because most people aren't even aware they can nominate articles and why I've added it to the tasks page.
I've also thought about having a regular open steam chat for discussions and ideas as the community and editors are increasing, it's getting difficult for me to keep up with the amount of changes and it might be better to seperate out areas to some of the more experienced editors (that would include yourself btw). I come from the Jimbo Wales school of thought, in that there shouldn't be specific people making the decisions and prefer a 'hands off', community based decision process. But to do that there needs to be some form of community discussion on current topics; we can't really work it through the discussion pages or individual talk pages as we have been doing. --Aurora 10:25, 28 February 2008 (CST)

Applying License Template

Aurora, please verify on image:headshot_heavy.jpg that I used the template properly. I wanted to double-check that I placed it right and I used the proper one before I start applying en masse. Thanks! --Wipnum 16:51, 10 March 2008 (CDT)

Yep, everything seems ok, it doesn't matter where you place it really as long as it's on there somewhere. Also don't worry too much about older images, at the moment there's no urgency to have all images tagged, it's more about getting used to doing it. --Aurora 17:28, 10 March 2008 (CDT)

License Teamplates

Aurora, could you please make a little tutorial or something on when and where to use these licenses ? Or is it only an admin's work ? --The_Scorpion 10:32, 11 March 2008 (CDT)

No it's not just admin's, you will see a drop down selection box when uploading files that has a list of all the available license templates. We probably do need a Help file about how to upload pictures though, I'll put something together when I've done looking into the copyright issues. --Aurora 11:38, 11 March 2008 (CDT)

Mailing List

Finally setup an admin mailing list... sign up here: http://mailman.tf2wiki.net/mailman/listinfo/wikiadmins/ Please put your Wiki user name in the name field somewhere. For example, I did "Andrew Kerr (Nos)". --Nos 19:08, 11 March 2008 (CST)

Done (I think) --Aurora 20:36, 11 March 2008 (CDT)

Weapon2 template

Kk. I do it for more compatibility. (Weapon2) I leave others DPS on 'DAMAGE' tommorow. Change template by self.

And one more understanding for distant ranges: I measure DAMAGE and DPS for "On an average distance the enemy covers only half of your sight label. On a far distance the enemy covers your sight area completely". I think, this is more practical from the point of usability for players.

ps. sry, my english not verywell

That's ok, I totally understand the reasoning for it and well done on creating templates. The only reason I mentioned it was because it would be rather confusing to have two templates that did the same thing but looked different. We might as well have just the one template with all the changes on that.
Ok, so I've just done it but got stuck with something - the DPS or Damage per second doesn't add up. On the Minigun article, you put the DPS as 150 at point blank range; that means that he would fire 3 rounds per second (seems low but ok..). The problem is that the Meet the Heavy video says "fires two hundred dollar, custom-tooled cartridges at ten thousand rounds per minute" - 10,000 / 60 = 166.6 per second. Understandably, that maybe made up for the video, but there is a huge difference between 3 and 166. I'm not sure we can include this info just yet, it probably needs testing, for the moment I haven't updated the template until you reply to this. --Aurora 13:21, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
I like to play as heavy. And I have a two computers on lan and tested it. I've killed other heavy (300 health) by 2 seconds on blank range. Soldier about 1.3 sec etc. it means, the damage, that heavy was do by the second about 150 ;)
I will test other weapong and add results. And you will change all to new template. by l2k

Template:Languages

I have some trouble using this template. When I use it on some pages (for example Medic/ru), this page becomes inaccessible. If you know cause of trouble, please let me know.

Do you mean when you apply the template and the update the article, that the wiki takes a long time to update? Or that after applying the template, the article updates ok but then the article is not viewable? --Aurora 06:01, 20 March 2008 (CDT)
Article updates, but is not viewable. You can try this by adding "Languages|Medic" template into article Medic/ru

Left-Shift Auto Medigun w/ Stutter script

So, I had to recreate the scripts you made for me since you did not post them. Just wanted to say.

Aw heck, I forgot to add my sig to the end of this post. --NiteCyper 10:09, 3 April 2008 (CDT)

Sorry, not had much time lately as I'm in the process of moving house. Look at it this way, you learn more about scripting by trial and error than someone trying to explain it :) --Aurora 06:06, 4 April 2008 (CDT)
You won't even talk to me on Steam. Also, I don't have access to TF2 anymore and require the assistance of another. The assistance of someone with scripting experience is a bonus, if you would. --NiteCyper 23:31, 5 April 2008 (CDT)

Nice page

I want a nice page too
