Multilanguage support features

Since the question arose about using titles appearing in the specific language, I've been looking for a solution. It appears that there is a magic word actually in the MediaWiki software, however as default it's disabled (from my understanding there are cache issues). To enable the feature on later versions (1.11>) the $wgAllowDisplayTitle needs to be set to true. I've looked through bugzilla and although there are minor issues with it, a lot of wiki's are using it without any issues; so I would say can we turn it on and see if things work ok? The rest of our language implementation seems to be ok and currently works fine imho. There are minor superficial issues like the long url will still show /pl or /es, however there won't be a solution to this other than moving to sub-domains (ie - es.tf2wiki.net) and separating the wiki's. The reason that we can't use article names in the given language is because although this might work for some articles that are different words, some words in other languages are the same (the Polish word for Metal is Metal if I remember what Arkane said) so wouldn't work. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:%24wgAllowDisplayTitle for more details. --Aurora 11:43, 26 February 2008 (CST)

Your wish is my command. It's enabled, so let me know if there are any problems! --Nos 17:33, 26 February 2008 (CST)
Hmm, interestingly it still doesn't seem to change the title. Maybe I'm reading it wrong or doing something wrong, it is late....:E I've added it to the German version of Badlands (mainly picked an easy one because it should just display Badlands for the title not Badlands/de), check the Badlands/de and tell me if I am doing something wrong. Only other thing I can think of is that the isn't defined in $magicWords but it does say still in use in the documentation. I always tend to over complicate things so it's probably me missing something simple. --Aurora 22:14, 26 February 2008 (CST)
Strange, everything I look at says it should be working. wgAllowDisplayTitle is set to true (and was by default). displaytitle is a magic word. I've tried it in all lower case (as its defined) but that didn't help either. I'm kind of stumped at this point. If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them. --Nos 11:33, 27 February 2008 (CST)
There is some info on the discussion page at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual_talk:%24wgAllowDisplayTitle that may work by removing some of the restrictions about what can and can't be overridden. Try it on the test site see if it fixes it and doesn't cause problems. --Aurora 15:46, 27 February 2008 (CST)
That seems to have worked, thanks for finding that. I didn't notice anything strange, so I made the change on the live site. If you do notice something, let me know and I can undo the change. --Nos 10:54, 28 February 2008 (CST)
Fantastic, seems to be working ok now, nice one --Aurora 11:17, 28 February 2008 (CST)
There appears to be a problem with the over-riding other languages when used. Not sure why but if (for example) someone adds a in Russian on Soldier/ru, the Russian title is also shown on the Soldier article. Over-riding the english article also doesn't make any difference, I guess this must be something do do with the internal caching. For the moment we will have to suspend the feature (I've already gone through all the articles, which took an age). --Aurora 05:18, 4 March 2008 (CST)
Okay, I've disabled it again. I know there's a new update for Mediawiki, but I don't think it addresses this issue at all. --Nos 08:08, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Article move privileges

Could the thought on allow general users to be allowed to move articles be revised? I've had to revert quite a lot of moves recently which have occurred without thought on child articles, language considerations, double redirects or even a mention as to why the move has been made. My thinking is to have a selection of people with move privileges and remove the privilege from normal users; then introduce a request to move template for normal users to apply which has a link to the users with rights in case of disputes or issues. --Aurora 05:18, 4 March 2008 (CST)

I was kind of wondering if this wasn't coming. Page moves have been restricted to yourself and WanderingFox. If you guys know of others that I should add to one or more of the groups, let me know. You're certainly more involved in the day to day opertaion of this site, so I'll take advice from you on who should have extra permissions. --Nos 08:08, 4 March 2008 (CST)
Yeah, I think the same; more people should be included in the admin side. I've been thinking we need to section some things off and bring more people in with higher privileges. I can't spend as much time on it as I used to , for the moment I'm a bit busy in my personal life and when I have come to check through some stuff it's been a mountain. More people are becoming active with maintenance so some responsibility needs delegating out. I really don't want it to become tightly controlled, it is everyone's wiki after all. Unfortunately it seems some people have the mentality that if it's not secured then it deserves to be abused. The best intentions also can cause problems on big projects if you don't know all the why's and how's so I guess it was inevitable that stuff like this needed addressing. --Aurora 09:12, 4 March 2008 (CST)
I'd be happy with Wilsonator, and Markd to be included as they have done a lot of work and have a grasp of understanding more advanced tasks. CountDOODOO, Wipnum and Southpaw018 have also done a lot of good content work and might be worth considering when their wiki skills get a bit better, but then again my wiki skills were worse when I started. Probably want to ask before assigning privileges though; some might not want to have any responsibility. --Aurora 09:35, 4 March 2008 (CST)
Thanks for the suggestions. I put an note on each of their pages asking them to comment here if they're interested. I think I'll add a delete group as well and put the group of you in as well... no sense in waiting for me to delete pages. --Nos 10:40, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Escalated Privilege Candidate Responses

Thanks from me to id be please to help out, and i will tread carefully (esp with templates) --mark"d"davis 13:12, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Done, you've got privileges to protect pages and move them. Thanks for all your help! (I'm lazy, I copied and pasted this) --Nos 14:35, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Thanks for your vote of confidence Nos. I'd love to have Escalated Privileges but I have just one question: What are Security Administrators? Are they people that can block users, delete articles, and remove uploaded pictures? Will I become one of those people? But you are right, I'm am limited in my knowledge of wiki editing and for that I'd like to start off with just some small privileges. One of my primary objectives with this wiki is to prevent vandalization. So, if I could just have some minor privileges (like you suggested), I believe I could really improve this wiki.--CountDOODOO 12:33, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Security Administrators (that's Aurora's name for them) simply put, can protect pages. That means that nobody except those in the pageprotectors group (and myself) can edit those pages. To date, I'm the only one that can block users, and delete stuff. I'm probably going to create a delete group as well that would be able to delete articles and uploaded files. I'll pretty much add you to all the groups you see listed there that Aurora and WanderingFox are in. If you're not comfortable with something, don't use it. You're being considered not because of your skill with the wiki, but because your a long time positive contributor to it. As Aurora mentioned above, he's learned a lot about as he went, and that's fine. Most everything can be undone, and this way, with a bigger admin group, we should be able to handle vandalism and such even faster. --Nos 12:33, 4 March 2008 (CST)

I'd personally be glad to, I haven't been so active lately but times have been busy. I've got plenty of stuff lined up for the wiki, including better weapons pictures et al.--Wilsonator 15:57, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Done, you've got privileges to protect pages and move them. Thanks for all your help! --Nos 07:55, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Thank you for the offer, Nos! I'm honored, and I'd love to help the Wiki out. --Southpaw018 16:51, 4 March 2008 (CST)

Done, you've got privileges to protect pages and move them. Thanks for all your help! --Nos 07:55, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Welcome aboard all, I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll quickly mention - Please don't move pages without any discussions (unless your own new page) and similar with protection, there are only a few pages and templates that should be protected, don't want it being fort knox :) I've added a new template called {{Move}} which people should be adding before any page is moved. This will categorize articles in to the Category:Requested moves category so you can easily find them. Any more templates that you think will be handy but not sure how to go about creating, let me know. Also please familiarizes yourselves with the Help:Contents page, especially the style guide section on Article titles, pimp the wiki and have fun ;) --Aurora 11:16, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Nos, I appreciate the offer and I'd be glad to help out in that way if necessary. Please count me in! --Wipnum 20:09, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Done, you've got privileges to protect pages and move them. Thanks for all your help! --Nos 09:22, 5 March 2008 (CST)

Did you get a response back?

Hey Nos, I remember back in the Spy responses discussion you said you e-mailed Valve and asked them if we could use the soundfiles in our wiki. Did you get a response back yet?--CountDOODOO 07:32, 10 March 2008 (CDT)

Nothing yet. If when I do hear something, I'll post about ASAP. 14:19, 10 March 2008 (CST)

Image licensing

Hello fellow TF2 Wiki editors. If you read this message before, forget what I wrote. I've just completed all the license templates and while doing research I found the Mediawiki software has a built in license function so there's no need for you to bother typing all the gunk in. You can now select the license when uploading images (however it's not enforced). I've also been digging through legal documents and found that in the Canadian Copyright Act a 'fair dealing' policy exists (similar to the UK fair dealing policy, a bit like the US 'fair use' policy but not as flexible) which can probably be used for all screenshots from TF2 (although I'm no legal expert so should anything go to court - it wasn't me, nobody saw me do it).

P.S. is there anyway of mass messaging specific people? I'm guessing not, it's a bit of a chore sending this to each admin :(

Thanks, --Aurora 16:10, 10 March 2008 (CDT) [updated --Aurora 21:14, 10 March 2008 (CDT)]

I've been thinking about setting up a couple mailing lists, I guess I should get around to that. I was thinking one for admins and one for regular users. Maybe an announce list as well. I'll look into it this week. --Nos 18:52, 10 March 2008 (CST)

Version/Revision check

Nos, I'm getting 'issues' with some of the functions not behaving as expected, as I'm not sure how or even if I can check code versions or variable settings, could you check me a few things please. First, ParserFunctions.php - what revision is it? I know there was a bug to do with using negative values in the #titleparts function that was only fixed after revision 28708 (Dec 20). Secondly, $wgNamespacesWithSubpages - what is this currently set to? {{SUBPAGENAME}} doesn't seem to be giving me just the subpage, only thing I can find on bugzilla is that this variable is false as default, meaning subpages aren't correctly recognised within the 'main' namespace (see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:%24wgNamespacesWithSubpages). --Aurora 09:42, 17 March 2008 (CDT)

Sorry for taking so long to respond... just swamped at work lately. The ParserFunctions.php that I have installed does not have any type of versioning information in the file, however it is older than Dec 20th. I can look at upgrading that in the near future, maybe by the weekend.

As for wgNamespacesWithSubpages: $wgNamespacesWithSubpages = array(

       NS_TALK           => true,
       NS_USER           => true,
       NS_USER_TALK      => true,
       NS_PROJECT_TALK   => true,
       NS_IMAGE_TALK     => true,
       NS_MEDIAWIKI_TALK => true,
       NS_TEMPLATE_TALK  => true,
       NS_HELP_TALK      => true,
       NS_CATEGORY_TALK  => true

);

is all that is set. I can set NS_MAIN => true if you like. --Nos 14:28, 18 March 2008 (CST)

Ahh that may explain why I'm getting the issues with {{SUBPAGENAME}}. Yes can you set the main namespace to true because we do use subpages for the language translations. I didn't mention that but I'm getting the problems with the languagebar not working without specifying the page and also applying it to categories. So the Category namespace also needs including as the languages pages have their own sub-categories as well (ex. Category:Main/ru). The #titleparts issue may not be needed if this fix works with the {{SUBPAGENAME}} and {{BASEPAGENAME}}, but I won't know that until I test it so hold off on the ParserFunctions.php upgrade and I'll get back to you on that. Thanks --Aurora 07:06, 19 March 2008 (CDT)
Okay, I've mad the change. --Nos 07:54, 19 March 2008 (CST)

Request for deletion

Hi. I accidentally created a page outside the Template namespace at Class Type Nav while making a template for the class type pages (Offensive, Defensive, Support). Can you delete this page?

Thank you in advance. -beep 01:26, 7 April 2008 (CDT)

Language Template

Hurm, I can't find anything wrong with the template code, which has confused me. If it inserted the template but didn't link to any pages, then it would be a problem with the template. But since it wont insert the template, is it some kind of parsing error?

Also:

  • I don't know why pages on wikipedia hang at all, do you know any reasons?
  • And have you got any other examples of pages which it doesn't work on?
  • There must be something in common with all the pages which don't work, we just need to find out what they have in common...

Sorry for not helping very much! :-( Captain p0t n00dle ~ T/c ~ 19:34, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for having a look. I know the main page was having the same issue, and it seems to have been resolved by removing the Language template. The strange this is, I created a Medic/2 page, and it won't even let me uncomment the Language template on that page, it just seems to time out. Not sure what's going on. Even stranger, I tried it on my test site, and it seems to work fine, so its not specifically a mediawiki issue, nor is it specific to a certain web server. The live site uses lighttpd and the backup is running on Apache. I'm out of ideas. -- Nos 15:45, 10 June 2008 (CST)
There is always another solution, I could put together a small and simple language template, one for each language, I will come up with some samples for you, however I can't promise anything too soon as this is my exam season and I have lots of revision to do (fun fun fun...) {also btw your sig is slightly broken ^^} Captain p0t n00dle ~ T/c ~ 22:26, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Whatever you think is best. I don't have a lot of experience with Templates, so whatever you want to play with is fine. Don't worry about about when you can do it... its been in this state for quite a while! Oh, and I fixed my signature :)-- Nos 15:45, 10 June 2008 (CST)

Hurm I tried something, have a look Medic Let me know if that's all right. Code:

{{LangStart}}
{{ru}}
{{LangEnd}}

It just uses user-box shaped tables

Also I created a page which I didn't need, could you delete it? Template:Languages2 Cheers

I think it looks alright, the only thing I wonder, is if there are multiple languages for a page, will that get a bit bulky. I would like to see links to the alternate languages there, I'm just not sure the best way to do it. In the end, as long as the editors and users of the site are happy, I'm happy! -- Nos 09:06, 11 June 2008 (CST)
There is another way, which I could make look like the current language bar, however all the languages would show, i.e. if a page didn't exist in a particular language, it would still link it, but it would be a broken link, Captain p0t n00dle ~ T/c ~ 15:13, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey Nos, and a couple questions about the wiki

Hey Nos, Just wanted to say thanks for doing the wiki. Super useful, and a great part of the tf2 community. I recently started up a TF2 community, Aged in Oak Casks, and really want to emphasis the community. I thought maybe you could add it to the community portal (similar to Team Fortress 2 Fort)? If you want to check it out, go here:

http://www.slightlyparted.com/aoc

Please note, I'm still working on it. Would love to have a million members, and support the tf2 community in every way. The site still needs some work, but everything necessary is there! We just got our server up, but I think we've got the bugs worked out. Just would love to build on the community and have some fun.

If you'd like, add me on Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197995895960

Feel free to add it if you like, I don't really pay to much attention to that page, though the other editors do. Actually, a lot of people watch all changes to the site. Welcome to the site. --Nos 17:00, 26 June 2008 (CST)
