Level 1 Wrench

I'm gonna beat you like a rented mule, boy!
The Engineer on alternate uses for a wrench.

The Uhlman Build-Matic Wrench is the melee weapon of the Engineer. Its primary function is the upgrade and repair of dispensers, teleporters, and sentry guns, as well as being a melee weapon. In addition, while placed buildings will construct themselves, striking them with the Wrench will cause them to build twice as fast as leaving them alone. This effect stacks with each additional Engineer striking the building with their Wrench during construction. The Wrench may also be used to remove the Spy's Electro Sappers, and is a formidable melee weapon. Its critical hit animation is a swing from right to left.

Trivia

  • Because of his sentry, the Engineer has a high crit rate without dealing much damage himself. This combined with the increased melee crit rate often leads to misconceptions about the wrench and it's "unnaturally high" crit rate.
  • Because of this statistically higher crit rate, unfortunate victims have dubbed the weapon "The Crit Wrench", sometimes abbreviated to "Crench".
  • The in-game model for the wrench is based off the original monkey wrench, designed by Charles Moncky in the 19th century, not the Stillson and crescent wrenches we associate with the phrase today.
  • The Wrench has Developer weapon variants.
  • As of July 1, 2010, The Wrench has a gold counterpart. This Gold Wrench has the same statistics, but any foes killed by the weapon are turned to solid Australium where they stand (or fell). These wrenches were part of the Engineer Update, with new information on the update released for every 25 wrenches found.
