Definition and usage
There are certain terms that are used in gaming for certain areas on the map. While some are map-specific, some are very general and can be used anywhere. Terms like this should be used in-game whenever possible for the best clarity and efficiency. Saying "There's a heavy weapons guy in the canyon under the bridge" is a lot harder to say than "Heavy in the pit". The terms listed below are used most in voice communication but can be used in text communication also.
Exterior terms
- Outside
Additional Names: Sky,
- The sky area surrounding a map. Something being "in" the sky means you can see the sky around it.
- Cliff
- A vertical (or near vertical) rock face.
- Pit
- A hole in the ground.
- Canyon
- A long valley cut in rock by a river.
- Building
- A closed structure with walls and a roof.
- Landmark
- A well-known structure that many players know about and can navigate by.
- Water
- When used as "water", it means any place where there is an accessible liquid in the map.
- When used as "the water(s)", it means the main place where there is the most water.
- Bridge
- A construction or natural feature that spans a divide.
Interior terms
- Floor
Addtional Names: The Plank,
- Any 1 or more solid surface that a player can walk on. Example: Sentry on the second floor.
- Ceiling
- Any 1 or more solid surfaces that a player sees if he looks up in an enclosed area.
- Wall
- Any 1 or more solid objects blocking the movement of a player in 1 direction.
- Room
- An area enclosed 1 or more walls, 1 or more floors, and 1 or more ceilings. A room usually has a door but can be completely enclosed or have an empty doorway.
- Fence
- A barrier that could be jumped over.
- Roof
- The top of a building that players can stand on.
- Window
- An opening in a wall that lets you see in or out.
- Door
- An object that, when triggered, reveals a hole in a wall, floor, or ceiling. May be triggered by any team or just 1 team.
- Tunnel
- A enclosed pathway that usually leads to a more open space.
- Water tunnel
- Additional names: Sewer
- A tunnel with water in it.
- Crawl space
- Additional names: Crawl
- A tunnel that you have to crouch to go through.
- Cave
- A tunnel or crawl space that leads to a dead end.
Team-related terms
Team-related terms require a team designation before them. For example, "Fort" would be "Red's fort" or "Blu's fort". You don't need a designation if the owner of the term is understood. For example, you could just say "The fort" if you are planning an attack on the enemy fort.
- Base
- Additional names: Fort, Fortress
- A building or series of buildings that belongs to (has the color or style scheme of) 1 team.
- Respawn area
- Additional names: Respawn, Spawn, Spawn room, Spawn area, Respawn room
- The area in which a particular team respawns. This is usually in an actual room with a team-activated door, but it may vary like in older maps such as "Bounce". Usually connected to a Resupply area
- Battlements
- Additional names: Sniper deck, Sniper's nest
- Any area within an actual base where players from the base's team can shoot out.
- Yard
- Any ground-level area between a base and the middle of the map.
- Bridge
- A solid object that crosses a fissure, pit, canyon, or water in one team's yard.
- Lobby
- Additional names: Main lobby, Main Entrance,
- The area that is a very-trafficed area of a base and is a crossroads of some sort between different hallways, respawn rooms, etc.
- Lower lobby
- The lobby below the main lobby.
- Upper lobby
- The lobby above the main lobby.
- Gate(s)
- Door(s) that open at a specific time.
